Beyond the Gate: The Last Gozzaki

Chapter 108: The Gift of a Throne

Xyron gently steered Maki out of his room, his hand firm but trembling slightly from the pain. He pulled the door shut behind them with a click. “It’s nothing, Maki. I went on a raid earlier… it’s just beast blood. Don’t worry about it,” he said, forcing a weary smile. He pinched her cheek playfully. “It’s your birthday! Tell me, what do you want? Anything in the world, just name it.”

Maki looked at him, her eyes narrowing with doubt. “But Xyron… you look so pale.”

“I said I’m fine! Anyway, I have something for you. Wait here.” Xyron ducked back into his room for a moment, and Maki’s mind raced. ‘He’s hiding something. I can feel it.’

When Xyron returned, he handed her a thick leather-bound file. “Read it.”

Maki opened the folder, her eyes scanning the legal documents. Her breath hitched. It was the official transfer of power. Xyron had legally abdicated his position, naming Maki Gozzaki as the 28th Head of the Gozzaki Clan.

“Xyron… what is this?” she whispered.

“Remember when we were kids?” Xyron said, leaning against the doorframe to keep his balance. “You always said you wanted to lead the clan and restore its honor. I don’t care about thrones or titles. I just want you to be happy. So, here it is. The clan is yours.”

Overwhelmed with emotion, Maki threw her arms around him. “Thank you! Thank you so much, Xyron!”

“Yeah, yeah, don’t mention it,” he winced as her hug pressed against his wounds. “Now, tell me, who’s coming to the party tonight?”

“Just my three best friends, Kim, and Yuhima,” Maki said, wiping her eyes.

“Perfect. Five people. I have some quick work to finish, then I’ll be back for the celebration.” Without waiting for a response, Xyron vanished into the hallway.

Maki stood there, clutching the file. The joy of being Leader was immense, but the nagging feeling in her gut wouldn’t go away. She walked back into Xyron’s room. She noticed a faint red smear on the wooden chair. She knelt and looked under the bed—there, hidden in the shadows, were small, crystalline shards of glass soaked in dark blood.

“What happened to you, Xyron?” she breathed, her heart sinking. “Kage! Kage!”

The shadow appeared instantly. “The Lord is in great pain, Maki-san,” Kage whispered, his voice full of sorrow. He summoned a few lower-tier Shadow Guardians to stand guard around her. “I will find him.” With that, Kage melted into the floor to track his master.

[Scene Shift: Kim’s Residence]

Kim was startled when Xyron appeared at his door, looking like he had crawled out of a war zone.

“Xyron? What the hell happened to you? Why aren’t you healing yourself?” Kim asked, rushing him inside.

“Just… just heal me, Kim. No questions,” Xyron grunted, sliding his hoodie off.

Kim gasped. Xyron’s torso was a roadmap of jagged cuts, and the bullet wound in his shoulder was angry and inflamed. “This is a gunshot wound! Xyron, your internal mana… it’s completely locked. What did you do?”

“I can’t use my powers right now,” Xyron admitted, his voice barely a whisper as Kim’s hands began to glow with a soft green light. The healing process was slow and agonizing because Xyron’s body wasn’t assisting with its usual S-Rank regeneration.

As the wounds closed into scars, Xyron pulled his shirt back on. “Make sure you come to the party. And listen… if you tell Maki I was here or that I’m hurt, I’ll kill you myself. Got it?”

Kim nodded slowly, his face full of concern. “I won’t tell her. But Xyron… you’re playing a dangerous game.”

“I know,” Xyron said, heading for the door. “But it’s her birthday. And today, everything has to be perfect.”

Editor’s Comment: The self-sacrifice Xyron is showing is peak character development. Giving the clan to Maki isn’t just a gift; it’s him trying to give her a future where she is powerful and protected, even if he isn’t around. However, by seeking help from Kim and revealing his ‘powerless’ state, Xyron has created a massive vulnerability. If any of his enemies find out the ‘Last Gozzaki’ is currently just a regular man, the party will turn into a massacre.
