17: Beyond the Gate: The Last Gozzaki Chapter 17: The Weight of Ambition 17: Beyond the Gate: The Last Gozzaki Chapter 17: The Weight of Ambition Chapter 17: The Weight of Ambition Xyron stood over Kim, the blue light in his eyes dimming but still cold.

“Trust is a strange thing, Kim,” Xyron whispered, his voice echoing in the ruined cave.

“It takes a lifetime to build, but only a second to shatter.

And once it’s broken…

it never looks the same again.” Kim lowered his head, his shoulders shaking.

“I know…

I’m sorry.

If you want to kill me for what I did, then do it.

I deserve it.” Xyron stared at him for a long moment, then with a sharp shimmer, his soul-dagger unspawned.

“Go.

I’m letting you live.

Don’t make me regret it.” Xyron turned to walk toward Chul’s headless corpse, but suddenly, his knees buckled.

He slammed into the ground, his breath catching in his throat.

‘Dammit…’ Xyron thought, his vision spinning.

‘I used every last drop of soul energy to heal my mortal wounds and create that Rank 2 dagger.

I’m at zero.’ Kim rushed toward him, panic in his eyes.

“Xyron!

What happened?

Are you okay?” “Stay back!” Xyron barked, gasping for air.

He crawled toward Chul’s body.

He knew the laws of the Third World—if a knight’s soul energy hits zero inside a portal, the atmosphere itself becomes toxic.

Without energy to protect his organs, he would die in minutes.

Xyron placed his hand on Chul’s chest.

‘Absorb.’ A violent, dark aura erupted from Chul’s remains, flowing into Xyron’s palm.

The pressure was so intense that Kim was physically pushed back several feet.

Xyron’s eyes snapped open, glowing brighter than ever as he refilled his reserves with the stolen energy of a Rank 2 Captain.

He stood up, feeling the power surge through his veins.

‘If I hadn’t taken Chul’s energy, the portal would have swallowed me whole,’ he realized.

He picked up a heavy metal box filled with high-grade Rare Stones—the loot Chul had forced Kim to collect.

“Let’s go,” Xyron said.

They stepped through the portal together, and a moment later, they were back in the quiet city park near Xyron’s home.

The blue vortex vanished behind them.

“Thanks for…

everything,” Kim said quietly.

“For saving my life, even after I…” “Go home, Kim,” Xyron interrupted.

“It’s late.” [Xyron’s Home] Xyron approached his front door, moving as silently as a ghost.

He hoped Maki was asleep; he didn’t want her to see him like this.

He turned the key slowly and pushed the door open, stepping into the dark hallway.

But the lights weren’t all off.

Maki was sitting in a chair directly facing the door, her face pale in the dim lamp-light.

As soon as she saw him, she stood up.

“Xyron?

I’ve been waiting—” She stopped mid-sentence, her eyes widening in horror.

Xyron dropped the heavy box of stones on the floor.

He didn’t realize how bad he looked.

His clothes were shredded, his hair was matted with dried blood, and there was a massive, blood-stained tear in his shirt where the stone had pierced him.

“What are you looking at?” Xyron asked, trying to sound casual.

“Are you…

are you okay?” Maki’s voice was a whisper.

She walked closer, her hands trembling as she touched the torn fabric of his sleeve.

“There’s so much blood, Xyron.

There are marks of daggers and…

oh god, your head…” “Maki, relax.

I’m fine,” Xyron said, putting a hand on her shoulder.

“I had a few injuries, but I’ve already healed.

Look at the box.” He kicked the metal lid open, revealing hundreds of shimmering, high-grade Rare Stones.

“I’m selling these tomorrow,” Xyron said, a hint of pride in his voice.

“This is enough to pay your college fees for the next three years, buy you that new laptop, and get me a phone.

Heck, we’ll have enough left over to buy this entire apartment.

We won’t ever have to pay rent again.” Maki didn’t even look at the stones.

Her eyes stayed on his.

“I don’t care about the money, Xyron.

I care about you.

I was terrified.” “You don’t have to be,” Xyron replied.

“With this much money, I could stop raiding for a year and we’d be fine.” A small, relieved smile finally appeared on Maki’s face.

“So…

you’re going to stay home now?

You’ll stay safe?” Xyron looked at her, and the warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, distant ambition.

“No.

I’m going back in as soon as I can.” Maki’s smile died instantly.

“But…

you just said we have enough money.

Why?” “Because I’m not doing this for money anymore, Maki,” Xyron said, turning toward his room.

“I’m doing this to become the strongest.

And I’m not stopping until I am.” The silence that followed was heavier than any monster Xyron had ever fought.

Editor’s Comment: Xyron has officially transitioned from a survivor to a predator.

He has the money to live a peaceful life, but the ‘Shadow’ inside him—or perhaps the memory of his father—is pushing him toward a path of total power.

Maki sees her brother changing into someone she doesn’t recognize.

Is Xyron becoming a hero, or is he becoming the very thing he used to fear?
