Beyond the Gate: The Last Gozzaki

Chapter 94: The Empty Village

Xyron cautiously walked through the village ruins. Suddenly, a hand grabbed his shoulder from behind a rock. It was the Chairman, looking frantic and disheveled.

“Xyron! You came! They ambushed me, and I lost my guards—they’re all gone!” The Chairman gasped.

Xyron narrowed his eyes, scanning the perimeter. “Chairman, where is Yujo? He never leaves your side.”

“He… he went to call for backup, I don’t know!” the Chairman stammered.

Xyron sighed, his face hardening. “Chairman, you aren’t an S-Rank anymore. Since our spar, your soul energy has been at zero. You’re a normal human now. You need to get out of here.”

Without waiting for an argument, Xyron placed a firm hand on the Chairman’s shoulder. With a flash of light, he teleported the old man directly to the safety of his home.

As soon as Xyron turned back, the air hummed with lethal intent. A knight lunged from the shadows, aiming a blade at Xyron’s neck. Xyron didn’t even flinch; he caught the attacker’s wrist mid-air with a snap. High above, perched on the branch of a gnarled tree, a man in dark robes watched with a smirk.

“So, you’re Xyron Gozzaki,” the man sneered. “I hear you’re just a shell of your former self.”

Xyron stood calm amidst the rubble. “Here is a deal. Apologize and walk away. There are innocent civilians hiding in this village, and I’d rather not turn their homes into a graveyard.”

The stranger laughed. “You think I take orders from a broken knight?”

Xyron’s eyes flashed with a cold, terrifying light. “I guess you prefer the hard way.”

Before the man could finish his sentence, a shadow elongated behind him. Kage materialized silently. With one fluid motion, Kage swung his blade—SHINK! The attacker’s head was severed before his body even had time to collapse. As the head hit the ground, Kage delivered a brutal kick, sending it flying into the air like a ball.

“Clean it up,” Xyron muttered, turning toward a destroyed building nearby. ‘Something is off,’ he thought. ‘This wasn’t a Titan attack. If it were, no one would have survived. The Chairman is lying, or he’s being manipulated.’

Meanwhile, back at the mansion, Maki was humming as she cooked dinner. She walked toward Xyron’s room with a spoon in hand. “Xyron, dinner is ready!” She opened the door, only to find the room empty. Her expression darkened, and she let out a frustrated scream. “HE LEFT WITHOUT TELLING ME AGAIN!”

Editor’s Comment:

The plot thickens with the Chairman’s inconsistent story. Xyron is starting to realize that the danger isn’t coming from the outside—it’s coming from the very people he’s been trying to protect. Maki’s growing frustration suggests she’s reaching her breaking point, and with Xyron acting as a lone wolf, the domestic harmony is about to shatter completely.
