Beyond the Gate: The Last Gozzaki
Chapter 96: The Dying Lion
Xyron watched as the last of the survivors were led to safety by his Shadow Guardians. He let out a weary breath, wiping a smudge of soot from his forehead. “Alright, work’s done here. I should head back.” He paused, a look of realization crossing his face. “Damn it… I left without telling Maki again. She’s going to kill me today. I’m definitely getting a lecture.”
As he turned to leave, his phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out to see an unknown international number.
“Now who could this be?” Xyron muttered, tapping the screen. “Hello?”
“Xyron? Is that you?” a young, sharp voice spoke from the other end.
“Yeah, this is Xyron. Who’s asking?”
The scene shifted to a sprawling, ultra-luxury villa in a secluded part of the countryside. Inside a sterile, high-tech bedroom, a young man in a tailored black suit stood by a window. His hair was short and dark, and his eyes were filled with exhaustion. He looked over at an old man lying on the bed, hooked up to various life-support machines.
“It’s me, Lamar,” the man said.
Xyron froze. “Lamar? You’re still the right-hand man for that coward leader? The one who left the Gozzaki clan to rot in Japan while he flew off to America with all the money?”
“Xyron, listen to me,” Lamar pleaded, his voice cracking. “The Leader is on his last breath. He wants to see you. There’s something important he needs to tell you.”
“Why would I care?” Xyron snapped. “What happened to him? Did he run out of money to buy a new heart?”
“It’s the Soul Disease,” Lamar whispered. “Even with all the medical tech in the world, he couldn’t stop it. His mana has turned toxic. The doctors say he has less than an hour left. He’s been calling your name for days.”
Xyron clenched his teeth. He remembered the history he had just told Hayima—the disease that wiped out the strongest Gozzakis. “I’ll come, but don’t expect me to be nice. I have no respect for that old man or his spoiled sons. They are all cowards who hid behind their wealth while we fought in the trenches.”
“I know, I know,” Lamar said, sounding relieved. “Just please, get here fast. My friend, don’t let the old man die before he gives you what is yours.”
Xyron looked at the sky. “Fine. I’m coming. Tell him to keep his eyes open for a little longer.”
Editor’s Comment:
The return of the ‘True’ Gozzaki lineage brings a lot of baggage. Xyron’s resentment toward the leader who abandoned Japan is deep-seated. However, the mention of the Soul Disease proves that even wealth can’t protect you from the decay of the soul. Lamar’s desperation suggests that the ‘important work’ the Leader has might be related to Xyron’s true origins—or perhaps a final inheritance that could change the power balance in Japan.
