Chapter 97: The Coronation of the Outcast
Xyron stepped into the room, the sterile smell of medicine hitting him instantly. He ignored the high-tech equipment and walked straight to the bedside of the dying man. Lamar stood by, looking anxious.
“Alright, old man,” Xyron said, his voice cold and devoid of sentiment. “Speak. I don’t have time to waste, and looking at you, neither do you. If you’re going to give me some cliché speech about family or my ‘real’ parents, stop. I’ll kill you before the Soul Disease does.”
“Xyron! Have some respect!” Lamar snapped. “He is the Clan Leader and he is years older than you!”
Xyron didn’t even look back. “Leader? He’s a survivor who ran away. Now, speak, old man.”
The Leader coughed, a rattling sound that echoed in the quiet room. He looked at Xyron with sunken, tired eyes. “Xyron… I want you to take my place. I want you to be the new Leader of the Gozzaki Clan.”
Xyron froze for a second, then barked out a laugh. “What? Say that again? You want me? I’m not even a biological Gozzaki. Why not one of your five sons or your precious grandsons?”
“You heard him, Xyron,” Lamar said solemnly. “It has to be you.”
“Forget it,” Xyron spat. “I have no interest in rebuilding a broken, cowardly clan. Your sons can fight over the scraps. They love money; give it to them.”
The Leader reached out a trembling hand, grabbing Xyron’s sleeve with surprising strength. “That is exactly why… they cannot have it. They only care for wealth. They would dismantle the clan in a day for profit. You are the only one with the strength to keep the name alive. Please… accept the position.”
Xyron pulled his arm away. “Even if I said yes, no one would follow an outsider.”
“I have already secured their permission,” the Leader whispered. “Everyone has agreed. There will be no opposition.”
Xyron looked at Lamar, who nodded in confirmation. “How many are left?” Xyron asked.
“Two hundred and fifty-three members,” Lamar replied.
The Leader closed his eyes, a faint, relieved smile appearing on his face. “With you in charge… the legacy won’t die. You have the heart of a King… unlike my own blood…”
His hand went limp, dropping onto the white sheets. The heart monitor let out a long, continuous beep.
“Leader? Leader!” Lamar rushed forward, checking his pulse. He looked back at Xyron, his eyes glistening. “He’s gone.”
Xyron stared at the body for a long moment. “I don’t want his mansions, his cars, or his personal wealth. Keep all of that for yourself or give it to his greedy sons. But since I am the Leader now, we’re doing things my way.”
He turned toward Lamar, his gaze sharp. “Rule number one: We are opening the doors. From today, anyone can join the Gozzaki Clan, regardless of their bloodline. If they have the spirit, they are one of us. And Lamar… you’re staying as my Right Hand.”
Editor’s Comment:
Xyron has officially taken the throne, but not as a traditional leader. By abolishing the bloodline requirement, he has effectively turned the Gozzaki Clan into a private army that can grow exponentially. This move will undoubtedly anger the pure-blood elders and the Leader’s biological sons, setting the stage for an internal power struggle while the threat of the Titans still looms.
