Chapter 106: The Red Trail
BANG!
The sound of the gunshot echoed through the luxury suite. Xyron felt a white-hot iron rod pierce his left shoulder. The force of the bullet threw him forward, and he crashed directly onto Baron Varkas. The Baron, coughing blood, managed to shove Xyron’s heavy, bleeding body off him.
Varkas stood up, his legs shaking, and pointed the pistol directly at Xyron’s forehead. “Good bye, Gozzaki,” he hissed, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Xyron, lying in a pool of his own blood, suddenly looked toward the corner of the room with wide, startled eyes. Instinctively, the Baron’s gaze flickered to the side for a fraction of a second. It was the only opening Xyron needed.
With a roar of agony, Xyron swept his leg across the floor, catching the Baron’s ankles. As Varkas hit the floor, the pistol skidded away. Xyron scrambled for it, his vision blurring. He grabbed the cold steel, aimed, and pulled the trigger.
Silence.
Baron Varkas lay still, a single bullet hole ending his corruption forever.
Outside, the five elite guards heard the final shot. “Move! Now!” the lead guard shouted, reloading his rifle. They burst into the room only to find their employer’s lifeless body. The balcony window was shattered. One guard looked down at the swimming pool—the water was a dark, swirling crimson, and the body of their comrade was floating face-down.
Meanwhile, Xyron was stumbling through the dark woods bordering the estate. He was clutching his left shoulder, his hand soaked in warm, sticky blood. Every step was a battle against unconsciousness.
“Can’t… heal…” he wheezed. “soul energy… still in the ring…”
He spotted a dilapidated, old house on the outskirts of the village—a place that looked abandoned for decades. He dragged himself inside, the floorboards groaning under his weight. He needed to stop the bleeding, or he wouldn’t make it to sunrise.
Searching through the shadows, he found an old, dusty cloth wrap. It wasn’t clean, but it was all he had. He pressed it hard against the exit wound in his shoulder, hissing in pain. He then ripped his own shirt into strips, tightly binding the deep gashes on his chest and stomach from the glass shards earlier.
He slumped against the wall, his breath coming in shallow gasps. He was safe for now, but he was miles from home, unable to teleport, and the sun was about to rise on Maki’s birthday.
Editor’s Comment:
This is the most ‘human’ we have ever seen Xyron. By killing the Baron without his S-Rank powers, he proved his lethality, but the cost was immense. He is now hiding in a ruin, badly injured and infected. If he doesn’t get back to his soul energy soon, the ‘Soul Disease’ or simple blood loss might do what the Baron couldn’t. The irony is sharp: he’s the leader of a legendary clan, yet he’s dying alone in a shack.
