Beyond the Gate: The Last Gozzaki

Chapter 93: The Call of Duty

The breakfast table was unusually lively. Hayima, Xyron, and Maki were eating, but the peace was short-lived. Xyron had his phone propped up, binge-watching his favorite anime while he ate.

“Can you please stop watching that for five minutes?” Maki shouted, slamming her fork down. “You haven’t been on a raid in weeks! You’re turning into a couch potato.”

Xyron sighed, locking his screen. “Maki, I used to go on raids for money and power. I’m already the strongest, and I have more wealth than the treasury. Can’t I just enjoy a series in peace?”

“Absolutely not!” she retorted. “I saw your fight with the Chairman. If you had actually died, do you have any idea how much trouble you would have caused me?”

Hayima, watching the bickering like a spectator at a tennis match, started giggling, covering her mouth with her tiny hands. Xyron pinched her cheek playfully. “Laugh all you want, kiddo.”

After breakfast, Xyron took Hayima outside. He summoned Ignis, the dragon’s massive form blocking out the morning sun. “Hayima,” he said, helping her climb onto the dragon’s back. “Whenever you see your home, tell Ignis. He’ll drop you off right at your door.”

As Ignis took to the skies with the little girl, Xyron’s phone vibrated violently. It was the Chairman.

“Xyron! Listen to me!” The Chairman’s voice was strained, filled with the sound of explosions in the background. “My office was hit. The Titans… they’re everywhere. I’m currently in the village near the outskirts. Get here now! I need an extraction!”

“I’m on my way, Chairman. Stay alive.”

Xyron launched himself into the air, breaking the sound barrier as he tore toward the coordinates. He reached the village in seconds, scanning the area for the Chairman. The streets were deserted, smoke rising from a hundred different points.

“Chairman? Where are you?” Xyron roared, hovering above the village square.

Something isn’t right, Xyron thought. Mr. X never told me they were planning an attack on the Chairman. Did he lie to me about the ‘Titan test’? Or is there a traitor within their ranks?

Editor’s Comment:

The dynamic between the Titans and Xyron is already showing cracks. If Mr. X didn’t inform Xyron about the attack on the Chairman, it means either Xyron is being played, or the Titans Group is more fractured than he thought. Xyron entering a combat zone without intel is a dangerous game, especially when he’s just recovering from a near-fatal injury.
