Beyond the Gate: The Last Gozzaki
Chapter 102: Secrets and Shadows
The air in the room rippled as Xyron clapped his hands. From the darkness beneath his feet, Kage rose like a pillar of smoke, his red eyes glowing faintly.
“Kage,” Xyron whispered, looking at the clock. “I have a dilemma. Do I head out to eliminate Baron Varkas first, or do I go shopping for the party supplies?”
Kage stood still, his voice echoing with a hollow resonance. “I am sorry, my Lord. But I will not assist you in a cold-blooded assassination. It is wrong, and you know it. That is why you hide your face from Maki-san when you do these things.”
Xyron gritted his teeth. “I didn’t ask for a lecture. Fine. If you won’t kill, then you’ll shop. Change into your human form and get every single thing on this list for the birthday party.”
With a shimmer of dark energy, Kage’s monstrous form compressed into that of an average, unassuming human man. Xyron pressed his bank card into Kage’s hand. “Go. Now.”
“As you wish, my Lord,” Kage replied, his tone heavy with disapproval. “But remember… a shadow cannot hide the light forever.”
Once Kage vanished, Xyron checked the time: 10:36 PM. He felt a strange itch at the back of his neck—a feeling that something was off. He walked silently toward Maki’s room and pushed the door open just a crack.
Maki was in the far corner, her back to the door, whispering frantically into her phone. Xyron’s heart hammered against his ribs. ‘Who is she talking to at this hour? Why is she hiding?’
He stepped into the room. The floorboards didn’t even creak. As Maki turned and saw him, her face went pale. She instantly cut the call and thrust the phone behind her back.
“Who were you talking to?” Xyron asked, his voice low and dangerous. “And why are you hiding in the dark?”
“No one!” Maki snapped, trying to sound annoyed. “I was just… playing a game! Leave me alone, Xyron!”
‘A game?’ Xyron thought. ‘Does she know about the Titans? Is she working with the Chairman to get rid of me because I’m too dangerous?’ Without a word, Xyron lunged forward, his S-Rank speed making him a blur. He snatched the phone right out of Maki’s hand before she could even blink.
[Scene Shift: The Void of Space]
Far beyond the reach of Earth’s atmosphere, seated upon a throne of obsidian and starlight, was Lucifer. His presence alone made the vacuum of space feel heavy. Kneeling before him was his subordinate, a dark reflection of power.
“You have done well,” Lucifer rumbled, his voice vibrating through the very fabric of reality. “But for now, stay here. We shall watch the play unfold. This world is not yet ripe for the harvest.”
Lucifer leaned forward, his eyes burning like dying suns. “Contact Ryan. Tell him the time is coming soon. He must sharpen his strength. The Gate will not remain closed forever.”
Editor’s Comment:
The tension is rising on two fronts. Locally, Xyron’s paranoia is getting the better of him. He is so used to enemies that he’s starting to see his own sister as a threat. Globally—or rather, galactically—Lucifer is preparing a new player named Ryan. If Xyron and Maki’s relationship breaks over a misunderstanding, they’ll be easy pickings for the storm that Lucifer is sending their way.
